WHAT WE DO:
We harvest lilies in stages measured in aperture with a scale of 0 (green looking like a
green bean) to 5 (petals split almost to calyx). We cut most varieties at a 2.5 to a 3
throughout the year while at holidays we will often cut at a 2 as people are shipping many
days before the holiday and asking to manage the ripening process themselves in water
and in and out of coolers as necessary.
HOW WE DECIDE:
Cut stage will be influenced for the most part; relative to the flowers continual
development while in the box and throughout its journey of transportation. Each variety
will develop at different rates depending on many factors including but not limited to;
- Bulb size
- Bulb age
- Bulb origin
- Time of year planted
- Weather & lighting conditions throughout its growth cycle.
- Time it will be hydrated in post harvest.
Different varieties not only require different cut stages, but they may require different
stages at different times of the year.
A second and equally important factor in our decision making of cut stages includes carrier
handling. Unfortunately many carriers today will drop boxes and or stand them on end.
The tighter a lily is cut the firmer the buds are and the less damage will be done. Just as
the riper they are cut, the more tender the buds will be and the more likely they are to
receive and show damage. Please speak to your sales representative for more information
on this topic.

We have prepared this portion of our site to help with some visual examples of stages at
times of years with some varieties. We will update this site continually with more
information on the subject.
We purposely keep this information limited to partially control information which we hold as
